About This Recipe

The Oreo stuffed cookie, a whole Oreo sandwich biscuit concealed inside a chocolate chip cookie dough ball and baked so that the Oreo softens and melds with the cookie around it, is among the most joyful creations in modern home baking. When the finished cookie is broken apart, the distinct layers of dark Oreo biscuit and cream filling are visible within the cookie, creating a cross-section that is simultaneously surprising and deeply satisfying.

The technique is simple but requires attention to portion control. The dough must completely enccase the Oreo with no gaps, any exposed Oreo will burn at the edges during baking. The dough balls will be considerably larger than standard cookies, which is correct. They need the extra dough to maintain their shape around the enclosed Oreo and to bake through properly without the exterior burning before the centre is done.

Dipping the finished, cooled cookies in melted dark chocolate is the step that transforms them from impressive into legendary. The cookie is already extraordinary on its own; the chocolate shell adds a crunch, a glossiness, and an additional layer of chocolate intensity that takes the whole thing into genuinely spectacular territory. Lay on baking paper to set, sprinkle with a few extra crushed Oreos or flaky salt while the chocolate is still wet, and you have a cookie that will be talked about for some time.

History & Origins

The Oreo was introduced by Nabisco in 1912 and has become the best-selling cookie in the United States. The concept of using Oreos as an ingredient in other baked goods, cheesecakes, ice creams, cakes, became widespread in American home baking in the latter half of the 20th century. The specific innovation of baking a whole Oreo inside a cookie emerged in food blogs around 2012 and spread rapidly through social media, becoming one of the defining viral baking recipes of the early social media era.

Why It’s Easy To Make

Ingredients

  • •t225g unsalted butter, softened

  • •t200g brown sugar

  • •t100g white sugar

  • •t2 large eggs

  • •t2 tsp vanilla extract

  • •t320g plain flour

  • •t1 tsp bicarbonate of soda

  • •t1 tsp salt

  • •t200g chocolate chips

  • •t14 Oreo cookies (regular size)

  • •t300g dark chocolate for dipping

  • •tCrushed Oreos or flaky salt to decorate

Directions

  • Beat butter and both sugars until fluffy. Add eggs and vanilla.
  • Mix in flour, bicarbonate of soda and salt. Fold in chocolate chips.
  • Refrigerate for 1 hour.
  • Preheat oven to 175°C. Line trays with baking paper.
  • Scoop a generous ball of dough. Flatten in your hand.
  • Place an Oreo in the centre. Wrap dough completely around the Oreo, sealing all edges.
  • Place on tray. These cookies are large, leave plenty of space.
  • Bake for 12 to 14 minutes until edges are golden and set.
  • Cool completely on a rack.
  • Melt dark chocolate. Dip each cooled cookie halfway or fully. Place on baking paper.
  • Sprinkle immediately with crushed Oreos or flaky salt. Allow to set completely.

Notes

  • Use more dough than you think you need to encase each Oreo, a thin dough shell will crack and expose the Oreo during baking.
These are large cookies. Do not try to make them smaller, the ratio of dough to Oreo needs to be maintained.
Cool completely before dipping in chocolate. Warm cookies will cause the chocolate to melt and not set properly.
Work quickly when dipping in chocolate, dark chocolate sets quickly at room temperature.

Make Ahead Tips

Assembled unbaked cookie balls (with Oreos inside) can be refrigerated for 2 days or frozen for 3 months. Bake from frozen at 175°C for 16 minutes. Baked cookies keep for 4 days. Dip in chocolate on the day of serving for the best appearance.

Storage & Serving

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 4 days. The chocolate coating keeps the cookie inside moist and the Oreo soft. These do not freeze well once dipped in chocolate. Undipped cookies freeze for 3 months. These are best revealed to guests whole and broken apart in front of them, the interior cross-section is the payoff and is significantly more impressive when seen for the first time.

Variations & Substitutions

Use Double Stuf Oreos for an even more dramatic cream filling layer. Use golden Oreos for a vanilla version with a paler, more subtle appearance. Add peanut butter chips alongside the chocolate chips in the cookie dough. Use milk or white chocolate for dipping instead of dark chocolate.
