A warm, hazelnut-chocolate mug cake made from just four ingredients including Nutella, ready in two minutes and tasting like a warm, gooey Ferrero Rocher in cake form.
About This Recipe
The Nutella mug cake is the simplest recipe in this collection. Four ingredients. One mug. Two minutes. The result is a warm, hazelnut-chocolate cake that is soft and slightly gooey in the centre with an intense, familiar flavour that is impossible not to enjoy. It requires no measuring spoons beyond a tablespoon and no technique beyond stirring.
Nutella acts simultaneously as the fat, the flavour, and the primary sweetener in this recipe. Its combination of cocoa, hazelnuts, sugar, and palm oil provides everything a cake batter needs in a single ingredient. The egg binds and provides structure. The flour gives it enough body to rise and set. The result is not a complex or sophisticated cake but it is a genuinely satisfying one that delivers exactly what it promises.
The mug cake is best eaten with a spoon directly from the mug while still warm, when the hazelnut chocolate is at its most fragrant and the texture is at its softest. A sprinkle of crushed hazelnuts or a few chocolate chips pressed into the top immediately after cooking adds texture and visual appeal with zero additional effort.
History and Origins
Nutella was introduced by Ferrero in 1964 as an affordable alternative to chocolate, made by mixing hazelnuts with cocoa and sugar. It became one of the world’s most widely consumed food spreads and a standard ingredient in European home baking. Its application in mug cakes became popular in the 2010s as food bloggers sought to make the format even simpler, discovering that Nutella’s unique combination of fat, sugar, and chocolate made it an ideal mug cake base.

•t1 large egg
•t2 tbsp plain flour
•t1 tbsp milk
•tPinch of salt
•tCrushed hazelnuts to top
Directions
- Add Nutella, egg, flour, milk and salt to a large microwave-safe mug.
- Mix thoroughly with a fork until completely smooth.
- Microwave on high for 60 to 90 seconds until just set on top.
- Top with crushed hazelnuts. Eat immediately.
Notes
- Mix very thoroughly. Unmixed streaks of flour produce uneven, doughy pockets.
This cake is richer and denser than a standard mug cake. A slightly smaller portion is satisfying.
The mug must be at least 300ml capacity to accommodate the rise.
Room temperature Nutella blends more easily than cold Nutella from the fridge
